What Celeb Stylists Think You Should Wear This Spring

Spring has arrived, which means it’s time to start going out twice as often wearing all your best and breeziest clothes. Here to help you navigate this season’s wildly experimental style waters are…stylists. We asked the ones in charge of dressing today’s leading men, front men, and athletes what they think you should wear as the weather warms up. And, while they’re at it, what trends a man might want to avoid. Their answers stacked up in a surprisingly succinct way. To summarize: a pair of pleated pants, a loud (but soft!) shirt, and something tie-dye are worth trying. And if chunky sneakers and sandals, tight clothes, and logos aren’t your thing, well, maybe that’s for the best? Read their specific advice down below and good luck out there.

Big Pleats

Pierre Suu

“I’m loving the pleated trouser. It’s a comfortable and flattering look on many body types. Not a fan of oversize streetwear looks that are cumbersome and look just ridiculous on men.”—Jeanne Yang, stylist to Jason Momoa and John Cho

“I’m obsessed with all the pleated looser trousers. It elevates every outfit. Worn with a casual outfit, especially in the place of jeans, it dresses it up a bit. Big no to sandals. Especially those ‘hiking sandals’. Just no.” —Ilaria Urbinati, stylist to Donald Glover and Rami Malek

“I love seeing the wide-leg pant trend back for summer. It isn’t for everyone but executed well it’s an ace. I can handle never seeing the oversize running sneaker again. Too much for me!” —Warren Alfie Baker, stylist to Lucas Hedges and Harry Shum Jr

“My favorite trends are a front-pleat trouser; ones that have a more relaxed fit on the hips and are slim towards the ankle. I really like the effortless look of a loose fitting pant on men. One trend men need to ditch are mock collar, or collarless leather jackets. I don’t think I’ve seen one I liked—it feels too prissy for such a masculine statement.” —Dani Michelle, stylist to Edgar Ramirez and Kourtney Kardashian

Tie-Dye

Say Cheese!

“One of the trends I love this summer is tie-dye! I’m a vintage lover so I’m here for just about anything that gives me a nostalgic feel.. I’m over logo-heavy outfits. Having on a designer piece is cool, [but] mixing it with indie designers and everyday brands is cooler.” —Khalilah Beavers, stylist to Carmelo Anthony and Jimmy Butler

“My favorite trend right now is tie-dye. It’s colorful and nostalgic. My least favorite is sandals. No one ever got laid wearing sandals.” —David Thomas, stylist to John Legend and Henry Golding

“Matching Sets. I love the versatility and the ability to create instant outfits. ‘Let me buy you a short set’—me, in my Beyonce voice. It’s also a great way to play with prints and color.” —Courtney Mays, stylist to Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan

“Matching sets are the BEST! It’s a simple way to look elevated and pulled together without trying too hard. Flip-flops are the worst trend—save it for the beach.” —Sonia Young, stylist to Joe Keery and Colton Haynes

“Love boldly mixing colors, prints, and patterns. Multi-print pieces are great. If you don’t have the budget for a designer multi-print piece, start mixing it up yourself. Stripes over patterns over bold colors. There is no wrong way to do it, as long as your attitude is as confident as the look itself. The worst summer trend for guys in 2019 are leather pants—who wants to wear leather pants in the summer?”—Avo Yermagyan, stylist to Nick Jonas and Leslie Odom, Jr.
