This Is the One Thing to Wear to Your Holiday Party

How to wear your darkest suit like a party animal, not a pallbearer.

The holiday season means holiday parties. And holiday parties mean dressing for holiday parties. But drinking the year’s strongest cocktails calls for a touch more formality than usual. So you’ve got a tricky balance to hit: You want to look good, but not like you went out and dropped a grand on a tartan dinner jacket, or whatever, that screams holiday-parties-only. So here’s what you’re gonna do: Wear a black suit. And if that sounds strange, just trust two of the most stylish dudes we know: Rami Malek and Chadwick Boseman.

Both actors attended the Governors Awards earlier this month and showed up in slim black suits. This is almost always a good idea. The “only for weddings and funerals” black suit no longer exists. Now it’s just the “I want to look damn good, probably after dark” black suit. To sufficiently Christmas-partify your black suit, make like Boseman and Malek, who gave their respective suits a serious kick in the lapels. Malek wore a Givenchy polka dot shirt under his, while Boseman wore a red snakeskin coat by Versace on top. And…that was it. Simple and effective.

If you don’t get down with such outlandish outerwear, or prefer florals to dots, you’re still good to go. As long as you employ this same formula—slim black suit + one statement item—you’re going to conjure the same party energy.
