One essential piece of outerwear, two excellent ways to pull it off.
In this era of extreme outerwear flexes, it’s easy to overlook the navy pea coat. But style yours a little bit like Muse’s Matthew Bellamy here, which is to say, a little bit like an actual navy man, and you’ll be able to hold your own around today’s maximalist dressers (see: Bellamy’s bandmate, Dominic Howard, in that zebra joint). If you’ve crossed the threshold into your 40s like this rocker has this is an especially good move but, really, it applies to any man who likes classic things but doesn’t want to be boring about the way he wears them.
Instead of tan chinos or dark jeans, favorites of the more conservative pea-coated man, Bellamy has been wearing his coat with white jeans and black combat boots. The combination nods to classic navy uniforms without being totally on the nose (last time we checked naval officers didn’t get to wear skinny denim), which is a good space to be in when you’re wearing military clothing. One recent day in New York City Bellamy dressed the kit down with a white graphic tee and gold chain necklace. That same week he swapped in a navy knit turtleneck for even more nautical flavor. Both looks put the peacoat front and center as the wardrobe icon that it is, instead of simply looking like a safe choice for staying warm.
Now, some extremely good news: it’s Black Friday/Cyber Monday/Sale Season. Buy everything you see below now instead of say, next week, and you’ll pay about $600 less at checkout. It doesn’t take a trained officer to recognize the soundness of a strategy like that.
